Graduation Weekend
UNC-Chapel Hill’s 2027 Spring Commencement is Saturday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in Kenan Stadium. Departmental ceremonies run Thursday, May 6 through Sunday, May 9.
That last sentence is the one that catches families out. Most people book two nights around the Saturday ceremony, then discover their graduate’s departmental ceremony is Thursday morning and the hooding is Friday afternoon. By then the rooms are gone.
Here is what the weekend actually looks like, what the hotels cost, and what to do if there are more than four of you.
| Day | What happens | What it means for booking |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday, May 6 | Departmental ceremonies begin | Many families need to arrive Wednesday night |
| Friday, May 7 | Departmental ceremonies, doctoral hooding | Peak dinner-reservation night in town |
| Saturday, May 8 | University Commencement, 7 p.m., Kenan Stadium | The night everyone stays |
| Sunday, May 9 | Remaining departmental ceremonies, move-out | Most families leave Sunday or Monday |
UNC publishes the full schedule, parking maps and ticket details in the spring. We update this page when they do. The official source is commencement.unc.edu.
Here is what Chapel Hill hotels were showing for Thursday, May 6, 2027 — the first night of commencement week — checked in September 2026, eight months ahead. Distances are to Kenan Stadium.

Read that column again. Eight months out, nearly every hotel within four miles of campus had no rooms on offer for the Thursday of commencement week. The one still selling close to the stadium was the Carolina Inn, at $1,272 a night.
If you want a hotel, book the Carolina Inn or the Graduate, and book them now. They are the two that go first and the two people regret not getting. If the campus hotels are gone, the next ring is Durham and the I-40 corridor at Patterson Place — fifteen to twenty-five minutes out, reliably cheaper, and a real option if your party is small and you do not mind driving.
For a couple, a hotel wins. Walkable, someone makes the bed, and you can cancel.
For a family of eight it stops being close. Four rooms at the Carolina Inn for five nights, at the rate it is showing for commencement week, is about $25,400 before tax — and you are still eating every meal out, spread across four rooms, with nowhere for everyone to sit together after the ceremony. That last part is the one families mention afterwards. Graduation weekend is the last time that group is in one place, and hotel rooms are built to keep people apart.
| Eight people, five nights | Four rooms at the Carolina Inn | Piedmont Cottage |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | About $25,400 before tax | $15,025 |
| Cleaning | — | $400 |
| Tax | About $3,300 | $1,620 |
| Total | About $28,700 | $17,045 |
| Per person, per night | About $718 | $426 |
| Everyone under one roof | No | Yes |
| Kitchen | No | Yes |
| Somewhere to sit together | The lobby | The living room |
| Housekeeping | Daily | No |
| Free cancellation | Usually | Limited |
| Parking | Paid, downtown | Free, off-street |
The honest version: a house is better for groups and worse for flexibility. If there is any chance your plans move, take the hotel.
Four king suites, each with its own full bathroom. Sleeps eight. Two suites on the ground floor open onto a wraparound deck; two upstairs have their own covered porches.
The en-suite layout is why this house works for graduation specifically. Two sets of parents and a set of grandparents can share a roof without sharing a bathroom, and the open kitchen and dining room hold everyone at once for the dinner afterwards.
On the golf course at Governors Club, 7.3 miles and about 19 minutes from Kenan Stadium. Five-night minimum over commencement weekend.
Three bedrooms, king beds, sleeps six, on Rock Creek Road — 3.4 miles and about 11 minutes from Kenan Stadium.
This one is already taken for commencement weekend 2027. It went twenty months out. If you are planning ahead for 2028, tell us now and we will come to you before the calendar opens.
Kenan Stadium sits in the middle of campus, and campus is not built for everyone arriving at once. UNC runs Park & Ride lots with shuttles on commencement day and publishes the map each spring.
Staying a few miles out is usually faster than staying downtown. Franklin Street and the streets around campus close or clog on the Saturday, and a hotel you can walk to from the stadium is also a hotel you cannot drive away from for two hours afterwards. From either of our homes it is a straightforward drive in, and you park where you are staying.
UNC-Chapel Hill’s 2027 Spring Commencement is Saturday, May 8, 2027, at 7 p.m. in Kenan Stadium. Departmental ceremonies run Thursday, May 6 through Sunday, May 9.
Four or five, arriving Wednesday and leaving Sunday or Monday. Departmental ceremonies are spread across four days, so families with one graduate often still need to be in town for three of them.
Further ahead than most people expect. Checked in September 2026 — eight months before the 2027 ceremony — nearly every hotel within four miles of campus was already showing no availability for the Thursday of commencement week.
For parties of six or more, usually yes. For eight people over five nights, Piedmont Cottage comes to $17,045 all in. Four rooms at the Carolina Inn over the same nights, at the rate it is currently showing, is closer to $28,700. For four people or fewer, a hotel is normally cheaper and more flexible.
7.3 miles, about 19 minutes by car outside of ceremony traffic. Allow extra on the Saturday.
UNC operates Park & Ride lots with shuttles and publishes the parking map in the spring on commencement.unc.edu. On-campus parking is limited and fills early.
Yes, almost everywhere. Hotels near campus typically require two to three nights over commencement. Piedmont Cottage has a five-night minimum over the weekend.
Piedmont Cottage is available as of September 2026. Mid-Century Designer is booked. Get in touch about 2028 and we will come to you first.
Commencement weekend books earlier every year. Tell us your graduate’s year and we will come to you before the calendar opens.
